Vision
The vision of the School of Computing and Information Science (SCIS) is:
“To be a Centre of Academic and Professional Excellence in Teaching, Research and Innovation.”
Mission
The mission of the School of Computing and Information Science is:
“To produce graduates equipped with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills, gained through excellent teaching and research, using novel teaching methods and state-of-the-art technologies and labs, so that they are able to address and solve societal problems.”
Specific Objectives - Mandate
The specific objectives of the School of Computing and Information Science are aligned with the five core strategic focus areas of the University:
- To train and graduate students with the requisite knowledge and skills in the different areas of computing (Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Data Science, Machine Learning, Computational Intelligence, Networks, Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity, etc.) so that they able to address and solve societal problems.
- To train and graduate students in the different areas of Information Science (knowledge organization-classification and cataloguing, records and archives management, inclusive information and library services, conservation and preservation, publishing and trade of information resources, management of e-resources and specialized records, automation and digitalization, information retrieval, indexing and abstracting services, etc.) so that they are able to record, manage, retrieve, market and disseminate the required information existing in the different media.
- To develop demand-driven academic programs that impart skills and knowledge to the student within the different new and emerging areas of computing and information science.
- To carry out quality research in the different areas of Computing and Information Science that offers novel solutions to the problems faced in government, private sector (including business and industry) and in academia.
- To acquire and setup state-of-the art ICT facilities, lecture rooms and any other requisite infrastructure that can facilitate quality teaching and learning, research and innovation.
- To train and/or recruit, and recommend appointment of staff with the required qualifications, skills and competencies to enhance quality teaching, research, publication and innovation.
- To strategically market the University in general, and the School of Computing and Information Science in particular, by advertising the different programmes of the School, research projects carried out and published in scholarly journals and any innovations made so as to enhance the visibility of the University and the School of Computing and Information Science in particular.
- To establish national, regional and international collaboration linkages and partnerships with internationally recognized institutions and/or research agencies, donors/sponsors and research or scholarship funders so as to enhance our teaching and learning, research & innovation, staff exchange, and staff professional and capacity building.
